Mosaic of Stories of Austin at its Best

100+ leaders share the moments that define our city

More than 100 leaders answered one question at the 2026 Leadership Austin Conference: When has Austin shown up at its best for you?

Their answers weren’t abstract — they were personal. Stories of courage.

Of neighbors stepping forward.

Of a community that refuses to stand still when it matters most.

What emerged was a portrait of a city grounded in possibility — and powered by people.

“There is light if we look for it. This is Austin’s moment. Join me in finding the light. And choosing to build from it.”
– Jill Goodman, Leadership Austin Chief Executive Officer

Reverse Keynote: Harnessing Stories

By leveraging AI for good and sharing the microphone with leaders in the room, the session highlighted moments of courage, care, and connection. AI-assisted synthesis revealed a clear throughline across more than 100 stories:

3 THEMES
  • (1) We Show Up for Each Other — Especially When It’s Hard: Courageous leadership means leaning in during challenges and standing beside one another during moments of uncertainty and growth.
  • (2) Belonging Is Built Through Small, Genuine Acts of Connection: Community is not created by grand gestures alone. It is built through everyday actions—listening, welcoming, and reaching across difference.
  • (3) Personal Leadership Moves Institutions: Change doesn’t begin with systems; it begins with people. Individual action creates ripple effects that shape organizations and, ultimately, our region.

Through a partnership with LeadersAtlas, founded by Austinite Abraham Sorock, technology helped harness voices representing more than 50 Zip codes across Central Texas and amplified real stories around Austin’s innovation, preserving what matters, and community connection, creating a rich portrait of leadership in action.

The stories surface what is already strong, already present, already Austin.

Rather than inventing something new; it’s reclaiming something true.

Austin at its Best

Together, these stories tell a powerful truth: Austin is at its best when its people choose to show up — for each other.

This is Austin.

Still Becoming

This July, our nation will mark 250 years of the American experiment—250 years of imperfect progress, unfinished work, and enduring possibility in the United States.

And that milestone invites a personal question of each of us: What is my role in shaping what comes next?

Because America is not finished.

Austin is not finished.

This region — our region — is still becoming.

“It’s easy to stand on the sidelines. It’s easy to critique. It’s harder to step forward — to take responsibility for shaping what comes next. That’s what Leadership Austin calls us to do,” urged Leadership Austin Board Chair Matt Pope.

And when courageous leaders come together — individual actions (big and small) amplify into collective momentum.

Ripples turn into waves. And waves reshape the future.

This is Austin’s moment. The ripple starts here.

“It’s easy to stand on the sidelines. It’s easy to critique. It’s harder to step forward — to take responsibility for shaping what comes next. That’s what Leadership Austin calls us to do.”

– Matt Pope, Leadership Austin Board Chair
