“No country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half of its citizens.” – Michelle Obama
Despite comprising more than half of the college-educated US labor force, women are still unrepresented at a leadership level relative to equally-credentialed male peers. According to research from The University of Arizona, men who used promotive speech in the workplace are recognized as assertive leaders, while women who used the same promotive speech are received with significantly less respect and enthusiasm. These gendered perceptions of leadership capability permeate the workforce landscape. A recent study by McKinsey shows that for every 100 men promoted and hired to manager, only 72 women are promoted and hired. At a C-suite level, only 1 in 5 executives is a woman and 1 in 25 is a woman of color. In this panel, we will explore the following questions: what are the normative barriers that have created gender gaps in leadership and how can we reverse them? What can organizations do to better recruit, nurture and advance women leaders? How can women in power create equitable pathways to opportunity for future leaders?
