Part 1: Community Resiliency- Supporting Our Most Vulnerable Communities
In these unprecedented times, the way people band together in response to disasters is a key factor in a community’s ability to recover. An extensive study on disaster recovery by the RAND Corporation defines community resilience as the capacity of a community to account for its vulnerabilities and develop capabilities to withstand, recover and learn from major health incidents. Moreover, the cultivation of community resilience must involve targeted strategies to support communities that are most vulnerable. In this two-part virtual series, we will explore the following questions: What are the regional economic, health and social consequences of the pandemic? Which communities in Greater Austin are most susceptible to these effects? What are the systems at play that leave certain communities more vulnerable to crises than others? Finally, how can leaders across Greater Austin collaborate to empower underserved communities and foster broad community resilience during these unprecedented times?
