Valuing Veterans in Our Community
According to the United Sates Census Bureau, there are 18.9 million veterans in the United States and nearly 1.5 million live in Texas. In addition, the Texas Veterans Commission notes that Texas is home to the largest women veteran population at an estimated 181, 402 and this number is projected to increase. So, it is not surprising to see both the Greater Austin and the Greater San Antonio regions make the top lists of best places for veterans to live. Factors such as veteran income, affordability, education and the arts, healthcare and proximity to the VA hospital play a part in these rankings. Even with these rankings and large numbers, it is important that people learn to see the value that veterans bring to our community. The goal of this panel is to help us recognize what those unique qualities, skills and talents are and learn how we can lift the veteran population in Texas, especially those who may not fit into the traditional image of who veterans are.
