Public Safety: What Are The Sticking Points?
We can all agree that we want to be safe. What that means and how we make it happen is not as easy to agree on. 40 percent of our City of Austin tax dollars are spent on the Austin Police Department (APD). Is this enough funding to adequately grow the capacity of the department to keep up with our region’s growth? What expectations should we have about the transparency and community accountability of the APD? These are among the many challenging questions that city officials are working through to negotiate a new 5-year contract with APD. Join us for a conversation about why the content of this contract is so significant. Hear from opposing perspectives on what is most important in order to keep our city safe and what is keeping the negotiations from coming to a resolution.
