As we extend our special five-part Engage Breakfast series, The Growing Divide, we continue to discuss the elements that make Austin strong, yet trends that are creating divisions. There are layers and layers to this theme, so we are spending the several months peeling back the issues, and hearing what various community leaders say about one of the city’s greatest and most immediate challenges.
The Growing Wage/Skills Gap
While Austin’s unemployment rate hovers low enough to gain recognition and praise, local residents understand that the workforce gap is a reality. Many experts and everyday employees can attest that there are not enough mid- to high-paying jobs to balance out the rising cost of living in Austin. There is also a gap in the skills needed to acquire higher wages. Our panelists will discuss how building a broader variety of jobs in Austin might affect the city’s economic outlook.
Our panelists include:
Greg Casar – District 4 Council Member, City of Austin
Steve Jackobs – Executive Director, Capital IDEA
Brian Kelsey – Principal and Founder, Civic Anayltics
Robert Hadlock – Moderator, KXAN
