As we extend our special five-part Engage Breakfast series, The Growing Divide, we continue to discuss the elements that make Austin strong, yet trends that are creating divisions. There are layers and layers to this theme, so we are spending the several months peeling back the issues, and hearing what various community leaders say about one of the city’s greatest and most immediate challenges.
The Growing Education Gap
With education comes opportunity; with opportunity doors open. To foster long-term success in our growing population, we must explore the challenges of our public education system across our community. The quantifiable research and anecdotal evidence shows needs are not being met equally among our public schools. In this conversation, our panelists will discuss aspects such as local funding, regional planning and policies and community involvement that impact the disparities of our city’s K-12 public education system.
Our panelists include:
Kathie Tovo –District 9 Council Member, Mayor Pro Tem; City of Austin
Edmund Oropez – Interim Chief Schools Officer; Austin ISD
Dr. Kazique Prince – Founder and CEO; Jelani Consulting, LLC
